ADA Sustainability Award 2023 designed Michele De Lucchi and realised by Riva 1920
The Sustainability Award is an absolute innovation in this year’s ADAs. Initially introduced in 2021 as a Special Mention to honour brands deserving of recognition for virtuous circular economy practices, this year, it has become a real award, complete with a trophy.
Designed by AMDL CIRCLE, headed by Michele De Lucchi, and crafted by Riva1920 from fragrant cedar of Lebanon, the trophy will certainly become a new icon of the Archiproducts awards, alongside the Salvatori marble monolith designed by Michael Anastassiades for the winning product designers, the metal sculptural object inspired by De Castelli’s “Möbius strip” designed by MUT Design, and the stainless steel house created by Ceadesign as a “seal” for the ADA jury.
The trophy will be awarded to brands that distinguish themselves by embracing circular economy and sustainable design principles, focusing on recyclable and biodegradable materials, reducing polluting emissions throughout the production cycle and optimising the product life cycle.
“For the Sustainability Award,” says Enzo Maiorano, Creative Director of Archiproducts, “we immediately thought of wood, the epitome of a sustainable material. The immediate association was with Riva1920. But above all, we chose to work with Maurizio, whose extraordinary personality and relentless ambition to transcend the limits of what is possible have made him a master of wood, a unique entrepreneur, and an example of excellence in sustainability.
Along with Maurizio, we also called upon Michele de Lucchi. It was truly an honour to see him at work. In him, the enlightened professional coexists with the sincerity of a child amazed by discovery. His speciality lies in maintaining the enthusiasm and enviable seriousness that children have when they play.
It was a wonderful team effort, with both the Riva1920 and AMDL Circle teams contributing with great commitment and energy!”
The Project for the Archiproducts Design Awards 2023 Sustainability Trophy
Inspired by the ADA logo, AMDL Circle’s project perfectly interprets Archiproducts’ request to establish its identity while being recognisable as part of the ADA project. Designed to be held as a trophy, it is a hybrid volume composed of a circular base that tapers in height and ends in a sloping hexagon.

“The project concept started from the idea of the act and the moment of delivery: a trophy is born to play a special role in an awards ceremony. It is not just an object, but a design product that reveals itself when awarded and expresses its main function: to celebrate the talent and dedication of those to whom it is given”, AMDL CIRCLE.
ADA Sustainability Award 2023 by Michele De Lucchi
“We were immediately passionate about the project,” says architect and designer Michele De Lucchi. “All the ingredients were there: the idea of designing an award that would raise awareness of sustainability and the opportunity to work on a team where discussion and dialogue were at the heart of the whole process. On the one hand, Riva1920, with whom we have had a strong relationship for many years, and on the other, Archiproducts, a meeting that from the very beginning revealed a shared desire to dare, to imagine new possibilities and horizons”.
ADA 2023, the Importance of Rewarding Sustainable Design
Sustainability in design has become an increasingly urgent issue. The principles of sustainable design – such as the use of reclaimed, recyclable, reusable, non-toxic materials chosen for the product’s longevity, the conscious consideration of the production process and the impact of production on the environment – are now integral to design thinking—hence, the increasingly widespread trend among designers and brands to make responsible choices.
This approach is now part of a common language where design helps create synergies among research, technology and social impact. The ADA Sustainability Award fits into this historical and current context, promoting and supporting companies that make sustainability their main mission.
“It was an honour for us,” says Maurizio Riva, CEO of Riva1920, “to be asked by Archiproducts to create the trophy for the ADA 2023 Sustainability Award. A company that, having worked with us for more than a decade, knows the values of Riva1920 and is therefore aware of the importance we attach to respect for the environment and eco-design, which have characterised our work for more than thirty years.
In the spirit of a long and fruitful collaboration, the trophy’s design was conceived by Michele De Lucchi, who is not just a designer and partner but also a friend whose human and professional journey has often intersected with that of our company”.
The selection of the Archiproducts Design Awards 2023 Sustainability Prize winners is in the hands of an exceptional jury composed of experts in eco-design and sustainable design.
