Salvatori and Anastassiades for the Archiproducts Design Awards 2020

The new designer trophy is a marble monolith inspired by the ADA logo

13/11/2020 – Archiproducts Design Awards adds a new symbol to its repertoire, a monolith in natural marble. The stone icon/object for the designers of the winning 2020 brands is produced by Salvatori and designed by Michael Anastassiades.

Absolute innovation for the fifth edition of the ADAs. The new designer award will complement the celebrated brand trophy, a limited edition in oxidized metal already produced by De Castelli and designed by Mut Design.

In perfect keeping with the award’s image, Anastassiades has reinterpreted the ADA logo using a totally coherent and recognizable formal language to fully express the meaning of the commission.

While the MUT Design brand trophy plays with geometry in a Möbius strip conceived as a single seamless element that winds around itself to create a figure inspired by the ADA logo, Anastassiades reinterprets the logo by transforming it into a pure solid in white Carrara marble. The result is as simple as it is complex in its workmanship and craft to create a sculptural prism that highlights the material qualities of the stone itself.

We started with the hexagonal logo and turned it into a bold, monolithic solid,’ explains Anastassiades.

A marble block is shaped into a prism with a hexagonal base inclined only on one side and delicately engraved on top. The slightly beveled edges, the soft texture of the marble, the faceting, and the slope interact with light, creating interplays of shadows and forms that change depending on the point of view.

The daring experiment was made possible by the cooperation between Anastassiades and Salvatori. Once again, the historic Tuscan brand demonstrates its skills in working marble, creating a light but imposing sculptural object that embraces and enhances the aesthetic and technical properties of stone.

Each piece is made from a single block of white Carrara marble and takes more than four hours to produce.’ explains CEO Gabriele Salvatori. ‘We used several different numerically controlled machines and, of course, a healthy dose of skillful manual craftsmanship, especially for the finishing touches that alone require more than 40 minutes of care and attention.

The result is an original mix of design, technology, innovation, and the age-old tradition of Italian workmanship,’ he continues.

When Archiproducts Design Awards contacted us to design and fabricate the designer trophy, we accepted the challenge with great enthusiasm but humbled by the responsibility. We knew that each piece was going to end up in the hands of world-renowned designers. Michael Anastassiades was the first name that came to mind for the design. With our trusted crew of Tuscan craftspeople, we set to work to create objects that the winners would really appreciate’.

Already proven in partnerships that gave birth to some of the Tuscan brand’s most recognizable pieces, the Salvatori/Anastassiades team perfectly embodies the award’s inspiring principle: The importance of the alchemy between designer and manufacturer – along with creativity, technique, vision, and tradition – to create unique objects that can improve people’s everyday lives.
