Amelia Tavella on the jury of the Archiproducts Design Awards 2023
Amelia Tavella was born in Corsica, where, thanks to the beauty of the island’s landscape, she was able to perceive and pursue “an openness to all horizons”. Her architectural work is characterised by a harmonious blend of sensuous, natural materials deeply rooted in the Mediterranean, reflecting the ethos and aesthetics of the region. Critics have highlighted the particular artistic approach that characterises Amelia Tavella’s work.
In 2021, the Grand Chancellery of the Legion of Honour named her a Knight of the National Order of Merit.
“The Mediterranean is my matrix. I come from this unique place. I am the daughter of the Mediterranean scrub and sand, and it is here that I learned the complexity of my work as an architect,” explains Amelia Tavella. “The sea, the rocks, the beach. My femininity has embraced the femininity of this sea, delicately reweaving damaged lace, inspired by sediment, a soft and original material. My island taught me about light, colour and slope, constantly reminding me that there is no valid creation without ethics and that the past is the cradle of the present. My architecture is inspired by Mediterranean scrub. I absorb its beauty, its colour, its texture, its density. I always pay homage to it. I do not separate. Nature and my buildings are together, responding to each other – first an echo, then a fusion. I use my island’s materials to reincarnate it each time. Only one word sums up and drives my desire as an architect: ethics. This is how my artistic approach develops, linked to my roots, to origins”.
This unique creative process can be seen in her diverse portfolio of projects including the A Strega school, the Saint Teresa house, the Saint-François convent, the Sotheby’s flagship in Corsica, the landscape and urban design of the Ajaccio citadel, the Edmond Simeoni school in Lumio, the Simone Veil school in Villeurbanne and the recent collaboration with Rudy Ricciotti for the Henri Tomasi Conservatory in Ajaccio.
